Mercredi 16 février :avec mon ami Nicholas D. nous traversions Central Park à pied,,discutant à voix haute ,en français, le rôle de la France dans le monde quand une dame ,bibliothécaire de son état,nous interrompt, nous priant en excellent français de l’excuser,pour nous demander si l’usage aujourd’hui dictait que l’on mît un accent aigu, ou grave, sur un E majuscule quand le mot en minuscule l’exige!
Il n’y a qu’à New York où cela peut arriver!

And what was your answer? When I studied French I was told that « no accents on capital letters. » but the other day, looking at TLFi for something else, a message flashed and I read that the omission of ‘accents’ was a typographic compromise made because the letter setters in the old days had a problem adding the accents and keeping the line space homogeneous, something that has been overcome in our times, therefore, YES ‘ACCENT’S regardless of the case.
Today,the usage seems to be to put an accent on capital letters!
